CERN experiments observe particle consistent with long-sought Higgs boson

Geneva, 4 July 2012. At a seminar held at CERN¹ today as a curtain raiser to the year’s major particle physics conference, ICHEP2012 in Melbourne, the ATLAS and CMS experiments presented their latest preliminary results in the search for the long sought Higgs particle. Both experiments observe a new particle in the mass region around 125-126 GeV.

“We observe in our data clear signs of a new particle, at the level of 5 sigma, in the mass region around 126 GeV. The outstanding performance of the LHC and ATLAS and the huge efforts of many people have brought us to this exciting stage,” said ATLAS experiment spokesperson Fabiola Gianotti, “but a little more time is needed to prepare these results for publication.”

"The results are preliminary but the 5 sigma signal at around 125 GeV we’re seeing is dramatic. This is indeed a new particle. We know it must be a boson and it’s the heaviest boson ever found,” said CMS experiment spokesperson Joe Incandela. “The implications are very significant and it is precisely for this reason that we must be extremely diligent in all of our studies and cross-checks."

“It’s hard not to get excited by these results,” said CERN Research Director Sergio Bertolucci. “ We stated last year that in 2012 we would either find a new Higgs-like particle or exclude the existence of the Standard Model Higgs. With all the necessary caution, it looks to me that we are at a branching point: the observation of this new particle indicates the path for the future towards a more detailed understanding of what we’re seeing in the data.”

The results presented today are labelled preliminary. They are based on data collected in 2011 and 2012, with the 2012 data still under analysis.  Publication of the analyses shown today is expected around the end of July. A more complete picture of today’s observations will emerge later this year after the LHC provides the experiments with more data.

The next step will be to determine the precise nature of the particle and its significance for our understanding of the universe. Are its properties as expected for the long-sought Higgs boson, the final missing ingredient in the Standard Model of particle physics? Or is it something more exotic? The Standard Model describes the fundamental particles from which we, and every visible thing in the universe, are made, and the forces acting between them. All the matter that we can see, however, appears to be no more than about 4% of the total. A more exotic version of the Higgs particle could be a bridge to understanding the 96% of the universe that remains obscure.

“We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature,” said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. “The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particle’s properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe.”

Positive identification of the new particle’s characteristics will take considerable time and data. But whatever form the Higgs particle takes, our knowledge of the fundamental structure of matter is about to take a major step forward.

BREAKING NEWS: possible Higgs boson detected

Physicists working at CERN's Large Hadron Collider say it's possible they've discovered the long-sought 'God particle'.  The Higgs boson could lead to 'new physics', they add.

"We're reaching into the fabric of the universe at a level we've never [reached] before," says Joe Icandela, a physicist at the University of California in Santa Barbara and the spokesman for one of the two major experiments hunting for the Higgs boson at CERN. "This is not like other ordinary particles. It's a key to the structure of the universe."

Nasa Reveals Manned Space Capsule Heading To Mars

NASA has revealed [this 3^rd. of July] the space capsule which it hopes will one day carry astronauts to the surface of Mars.
The Orion space capsule might look like the craft which took astronauts to the Moon, they insist it is far more advanced - and can do far more.

The olive-green "pressure shell" might not look too impressive, but space industry leaders say it should power the next phase of space exploration for decades.

Scheduled to fly its first manned mission in nine (nine!) years, in 2021, the Orion has now arrived at the Kennedy Space Center for development before a test flight in 2014.

On that test flight the capsule will be launched on a Delta-4 Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, and will orbit Earth twice at 15 times the height of than the International Space Station.

Eventually the Orion will be launched on the Space Launch System, which itself is scheduled to become one of the most powerful rockets ever made when it is tested in 2017.

La NASA da a conocer Cápsula Espacial que irá a Marte

La NASA dio a conocer [este martes 3 de Julio], la cápsula espacial que espera un día llevar astronautas a la superficie de Marte.

La cápsula espacial Orión puede lucir como el aparato que llevó astronautas a la Luna, pero se insiste en que es mucho más avanzada y puede hacer muchas más cosas.

La “estructura de presión” de color verde-oliva puede no lucir muy impresionante, pero líderes de la industria espacial dicen que impulsará la próxima fase de la exploración espacial por décadas.

Programada para volar su primera misión tripulada dentro de nueve años (¡nueve!), la Orión llegó ahora al Centro Espacial Kennedy para ser completada hasta su vuelo de prueba en 2014.

En ese vuelo de prueba la cápsula se lanzará en un cohete Delta-4 Heavy desde Cabo Cañaveral, y orbitará la Tierra dos veces a una altura 15 veces mayor que la de la Estación Espacial Internacional.

Finalmente la Orión se lanzará con el Sistema de Lanzamiento Espacial, el cual en sí mismo está programado que llegue a ser uno de los más poderosos cohetes que jamás se haya fabricado, cuando se pruebe en 2017.

Argentinian growing interest in UFOs: why?

If a social network could help to measure what is going on among people interested in UFOs, Facebook is of great help.

Since I opened my FB page, day after day I am witness of the creation of a new organization, of meeting groups, new magazines, new web pages and radio programs referred to UFOs in Argentina.

On the one hand, it surprises the enthusiasm of those people engaged in such activities, like if Argentina were a privileged place in the world supposedly visited by “extraterrestrial spaceships” (because in the vast majority of the people dealing with the subject there, that is the idea behind their interest). 

For me, (with some honorable exceptions of people I know very well since long time ago) they are mostly newcomers who evidently do not know almost anything about the 65 years history of UFOs and UFOLOGY, and there is a marked absence of good criteria and logical thought, which are substituted by the wish to believe, and a festival of fantasy and almost craziness.  

When we can read that someone who thinks that frequently is seen “E.T. spaceships” writes: “every time I see one of them I salute them saying !”, I frankly think that we are in front of a clear manifestation of a fantasy prone personality, not really a witness. That behavior is something out of reality.

Like the people that in their lack of knowledge think that they are seeing “chemtrails” (following the conspiracy idea behind them) when what they see are just airplane contrails.

More interesting is to verify where they get their “information”: videos in YouTube and some “saucerian” web pages. 

There is also a growing number of individuals that point their photo or video cameras to any place in the sky, and when they go to see what they have gotten in their “adventure”, they are rewarded seen in the screen of their PCs or laptops a little point or line that immediately they themselves declare as a “UFO” and surely will upload to YouTube and put on Facebook and web pages, as “Video of a UFO in…” or “UFO photographed in…”.

Reversing what has been the rule for decades among ufologists, they call “UFO” what it really is a “UFO-report”, not understanding that the declaration that something is a UFO is coming after a meticulous work of investigation and study of a given case, but never before.

Worst of all is that no matter the efforts to make them to analyze, to develop good criteria, to get to know and differentiate a natural or artificial phenomenon from something “extraordinaire”, it seems that they are inside a cocoon in which they feel comfortably and they don’t bother to accept, or even consider the warnings, the clarifications and precisions coming from people that have dedicated a whole life to the UFO subject.

Moreover, they are totally confused about who is a real, true and serious investigator, and who is someone that have used the UFO subject as a merchandise, creating  fraudulent “cases”, forcing witnesses to say what they have not seen, etc. and making UFOs their way of living, like Mr. F. Z. in Argentina (I don’t like even to mention his name) , or Mr. Jaime Maussan in Mexico.

And then we have to consider another couple of things that even unconsciously are playing their role in this apparent outbreak of “ufo activity” in that country.

On a time of serious economic difficulties, the UFO subject could help to distract the attention of the real problems that the Argentinian society faces, or it could be a palliative to the stressful situations people are living there, and finally, for some of them –surely a little minority— it could be a way to make money, once again exploiting commercially the wish to believe of the population.

Otherwise there is t no reason whatsoever for such rush in Ufology happening there.

The imagination of some people, and the wish to believe and to think that they have seen “something out of this world” of other people, are the factors that can explain that strange and almost unique situation, which, by the way, is not replicated in Chile and Uruguay, border neighbors of Argentina, neither in Brazil nor elsewhere in the world.

Last but not least, some people speculate with a catastrophic vision, believing in the myth of the end of the world for December of this year.

All said, I give my support to IDREC,  a group of young people seriously interested in the UFO phenomenon that tries to get images of things flying very high, using their night vision video camera in conjunction with a TV set. They need to perfect their system and they could be useful for a study done on a hot spot where there could be the recurrent presence of Anomalous Luminous Phenomena.

I would like also to say that the informal meetings of people to just talk openly about issues related to the UFO subject are a plausible initiative, and they could be interesting platforms from where to advance in favor of good investigation, analysis and general study of the issue. So far, they are not doing Ufology, just chatting.

Creciente interés en los OVNIs en Argentina: ¿por qué?

Si una red social de internet puede ayudar a medir lo que está pasando entre personas interesadas en OVNIs, Facebook es de gran ayuda.

Desde que abrí mi página FB, día tras día soy testigo de la creación de una nueva organización, de cafés temáticos, de nuevas revistas, nuevas páginas web y programas de radio referidos a los OVNIs, en Argentina.

Por un lado sorprende el entusiasmo de esas personas involucradas en tales actividades, como si Argentina fuese un lugar privilegiado en el mundo supuestamente visitado por “naves espaciales extraterrestres” (porque en la vasta mayoría de las personas que tratan el tema allí, esa es la idea detrás de su interés).

Para mi, (con algunas honorables excepciones de personas que conozco muy bien desde mucho tiempo) mayormente se trata de recién llegados que evidentemente no saben casi nada de los 65 años de historia de los OVNIs y de la Ovnilogía, y hay una marcada ausencia de buenos criterios y de pensamiento lógico, que son sustituidos por las ganas de creer, y un festival de fantasía y casi locura.

Cuando podemos leer que alguien que piensa que frecuentemente ve “naves espaciales E.T.” escribe: “cada vez que veo una de ellas las saludo diciendo ”, francamente pienso que estamos frente a una clara manifestación de una personalidad con tendencia a la fantasía, no realmente ante un testigo. Esa conducta es algo que está fuera de la realidad.

Como las personas que en su desconocimiento,  piensan que están viendo “estelas químicas” (siguiendo la idea conspirativa tras ellas) cuando lo que ven son simplemente estelas de condensación de los aviones.

Más interesante es verificar de dónde obtienen su “información”: videos en YouTube y algunas páginas web “platillistas”.

Hay también un creciente número de personas que apuntan su cámara de fotos o de video a cualquier lugar del cielo, y cuando van a ver qué han obtenido de su “aventura”, son recompensados viendo en la pantalla de sus PCs o laptops un pequeño punto o línea que inmediatamente ellos mismos declaran que es un “OVNI” y seguramente la subirán a YouTube y la pondrán en Facebook y en páginas web, como “Video de un OVNI en…” o “OVNI fotografiado en…”

Revirtiendo lo que ha sido una regla por décadas entre los Ovnílogos, ellos llaman “OVNI” a lo que realmente es una “denuncia de OVNI”, no comprendiendo que la declaración de que algo es un OVNI ocurre después de un meticuloso trabajo de investigación y estudio de un caso dado, pero nunca antes.

Lo peor de todo es que no importa los esfuerzos por hacerles analizar, desarrollar criterios adecuados, y saber diferenciar entre un fenómeno natural o artificial conocido y algo “extraordinario”, parece que estuvieran dentro de un capullo en el cual se sienten confortables y no se molestan en aceptar, o siquiera considerar las advertencias, las clarificaciones y precisiones procedentes de personas que han dedicado una vida al tema OVNI.

Más aún, están totalmente confundidos acerca de quién es un real, verdadero y serio investigador, y quién es alguien que ha usado el tema OVNI como mercancía, creando “casos” fraudulentos, forzando a testigos a decir lo que no han visto, etc. y haciendo de los OVNIs su modus vivendi, como el Sr. F.Z. (no quiero ni nombrarlo) en Argentina, o Jaime Maussán en México.

Y luego tenemos que considerar otro par de cosas que aún inconscientemente están desempeñando un papel en este aparente brote de “actividad ovni” en ese país.

En un momento de serias dificultades económicas, el tema OVNI puede ayudar a distraer la atención de los verdaderos problemas que enfrenta la sociedad argentina, o puede ser un paliativo de situaciones estresantes que la gente está viviendo allí, y finalmente, para algunos de ellos, --ciertamente una ínfima minoría—puede ser una forma de hacer dinero, una vez más, explotando comercialmente la ganas de creer de la vasta mayoría de la gente.

De otra manera, no hay razón alguna para tal efervescencia en Ovnilogía como está ocurriendo allí.

La imaginación de algunas personas, y las ganas de creer y de pensar que han visto “algo que no es de este mundo” de otras, son los factores que pueden explicar esa extraña y casi exclusiva situación, que, dicho sea de paso, no se ve replicada en Chile y Uruguay, los dos países limítrofes con Argentina, ni en Brasil o cualquier otra parte del mundo.

Y por último, pero no menos importante, algunos individuos especulan con una visión catastrófica, creyendo en el mito del fin del mundo para Diciembre de este año.

Dicho todo esto, apoyo a IDREC, un grupo de jóvenes seriamente interesados en el fenómeno OVNI que trata de obtener imágenes de cosas que vuelan muy alto, usando su cámara de visor nocturno en conjunción con una pantalla de televisión. Necesitan perfeccionar su sistema, y ellos pueden ser útiles en un estudio hecho en un lugar caliente, donde pueda darse la presencia recurrente de Fenómenos Luminosos Anómalos.

También quisiera decir que las reuniones informales de personas para simplemente hablar abiertamente sobre asuntos relacionados con el tema OVNI son una plausible iniciativa y pueden llegar a ser plataformas desde las cuales avanzar a favor de buena investigación, análisis y estudio general sobre el tema. Por ahora no están haciendo Ovnilogía, sólo están dialogando.
